
Stop the “Skinning” Problem on Aluminum Wheels
If you’ve ever used a standard convection oven to cure powder-coated aluminum wheels, you know the frustration. The surface heats up way too fast, creating this hard “skin” or crust on top. Here’s the problem: once that skin locks in, it traps all the solvents and gases underneath. You end up with those annoying pinholes and bubbles. Or worse, the finish looks polished and pretty, but it doesn’t actually stick to the wheel. We fixed this by switching to shortwave infrared (SWIR) lamps.
Heating from the Inside Out
Most heat just warms up the air around the part. Shortwave IR is different. It uses high-frequency photons that punch right through the powder layer and hit the aluminum substrate itself. The metal wheel gets hot first. Then, that heat radiates back up through the coating from the bottom. Because it’s heating from the inside out, the bottom of the powder melts and flows before the surface seals shut. No trapped gas. No skinning. Just a clean, uniform cure.
The Nitty-Gritty (And what to watch out for)
We use high-density quartz tubes with halogen filaments to get the power needed for fast cycles. We’re pushing a lot of energy into a very small space. But you have to be careful with your power setup. These tubes pull a massive amount of current. If your wiring isn’t up to the task, you’re going to trip breakers or—even worse—melt your connectors. Also, these lamps hit operating temperature almost instantly. You can’t just leave them running. You’ll need a timed trigger or a sensor linked to your conveyor. Otherwise, you risk overheating the aluminum and warping the wheel.
Making it Work on the Shop Floor
We designed these to be a simple drop-in replacement. We used standard connectors, so if a tube burns out, you can swap it in a couple of minutes and get back to work. By aiming that IR energy directly at the rim and spokes, you can knock your cure times down from hours to just a few minutes. It’s a massive shift in how the day feels when you aren’t waiting around for an oven to catch up.
